Meeting Saturday 9/28 Noon EST On The Future Of Sandbox

September 26, 2013 in Free Game Maker News, Make A Game by Mike

Please join us on Saturday at Noon EST for a meeting on the future of Sandbox!  To join us you can either click on THIS LINK or use an IRC client to join us at #Sandbox

In the meeting we will be discussing the future of Platinum Arts Sandbox Free 3D Game Maker and more specifically the commercial edition.  The reason for doing a commercial edition is so that I can pay coders and content creators to help advance Sandbox and truly make it the best game maker it can be.  We’ll be doing a Kickstarter and also putting it on Steam Greenlight.  I don’t plan on making it expensive but price range is also something we can talk about. I want it to be easily affordable but also enough so I can form a quality team and really help push Sandbox forward.  The commercial version of Sandbox will feature a new graphical engine and the older graphical engine versions will still be completely free. Also the commercial edition will still be of course completely open source.  I’d like to port back what cool features I can from the commercial version to the older version too if possible!

For more information on ideas we have for the Kickstarter and things we’ll be discussing please head over to the FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT POST.  Any and all ideas and suggestions are welcome!  If you feel like I left something off the list that was in the wishlist thread please feel free to mention it again!

Thank you for your time and for any help making Sandbox the best game editor it can be!  If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in that forum thread!  Take care 🙂

Sandbox On Steam? Please Let Us Know What You Think!

September 18, 2013 in Free Game Maker News, Make A Game by Mike

So recently instead of doing a Kickstarter for Platinum Arts Sandbox Free 3D Game Maker, I was thinking about trying to get it on Steam.  The reason is that if it keeps doing well I could continue to pay a coder or two to keep moving Sandbox along and modeler too to bring in assets that the community can use commercially. With the Kickstarter it would be mainly a one time shot but hopefully on Steam it would bring in a flow of money so Sandbox can keep on growing. I’d like to keep it cheap, around $5 as Steam won’t let us put it on there for free. Also it would be the newer and improved graphics engine version that hasn’t been released yet. Sandbox of course would still be Open Source and available to be used commercially, in fact the plan would be to have all content be able to be used commercially. I’d love to eventually hire a few coders too so they could focus on growing the FPS, RPG, Sidescroller mode, and Vehicle modes and perhaps each take an area. Also I’d hopefully have more money to add in bigger features that the community has been asking for such as more powerful physics.  As a note the older graphic engine version will still of course be free and I also plan to keep the development version still open to the public.  I think having a budget is a huge deal because it is very hard to get good quality volunteers but if I can afford to pay them then everyone wins because we’re are getting new features and improvements to the engine while the coders are happy because they are getting a money return.  Since I work with kids I unfortunately can’t afford to pay for it out of my own pocket so I think this is the best logical solution.  Any other ideas are certain welcome too!

With the Steam version EVERYTHING in it would be able to be used commercially!!

Please let me know what you think in the Steam Forum Post and if you would support such a project!  Take care and have an awesome day!

Make A Game Series – D. The Atom Shifter Introduction

September 8, 2013 in Make A Game by Mike

Since we are making a commercial game called D. The Atom Shifter I thought it might be useful and interesting to post updates on here once in a while about what the process is to make a game and where we are in the game design process.  The goal of course would be to give you insight into how to make your own game and to show you that it is viable using Platinum Arts Sandbox Free Game Maker.

Also D. The Atom Shifter is going to be pivotal to Platinum Arts Sandbox Free Game Maker because a lot, if not all, of the new features going into the game will be added to Sandbox.  So as a result a lot of the updates on this page will now be centered around D. and the status of the project. I will also soon be compiling the best feature suggestions that the community has posted in the Wishlist Forum Thread and they will be put on the list to be added to D.!  There will be so much more potential for greater features when we have a budget!  Our Kickstarter for D. will hopefully be in the next 2-3 weeks so please follow us!  Also if you are using Sandbox to make a game let me know and I would love to post updates on here about your game as well!

Currently we have a great design team with Stefos on Modeling, Animation and Concept Art.  Matt (aka Kid_Matthew) and Tim are our incredibly talented mappers and Christian is our texture artist.  For music I am working with Neurosphere again to add in some high intensity heavy metal music!  These will probably mostly be for the Wave Defense levels.

In our development we are at the point where we are writing up a concept document so that we can plan out our gameplay and also Prototype levels have begun.  Both Tim and Matt are creating progression type levels while I’m working on a Wave Defense level.  Having a prototype is a great way to test gameplay and see how it is in action and to make sure from early on that it is actually fun!  D. The Atom Shifter is definitely a game that is going to be focused on fun!

Check out the current planned features:
– Developed by the Project Lead of the popular and action packed Doom 3 Mod Last Man Standing and the Free Game Maker Platinum Arts Sandbox
– An Action RPG that you play how you want! You can fully customize D.’s stats at any time during the game, even during battle!
– Absorb abilities from your enemies
– Non Linear Exploration
– Physics System
– Lots of magic items, weapons and spells to find!
– Shifting/Morphing Self
– (Hopefully) Wave Mode where you see how long you can survive vs varying waves of monsters!
– Dev tools released to the community to be able to make mods and FULL COMMERCIAL GAMES! Full Source might possibly be released as well.
– Treasure hunting and secret passages!
– Coop and/or Random map Generation (Dependent on Kickstarter success)
