Instead, google how to make the texture you want in gimp, there almost certainly is a tutorial out there somewhere. You may want to try the Gimp Talk forums to begin with.
Then you will probably want to make it seamless

To make a realistic river:

This one is easy...

Enter heightmap mode, and scroll down, so that you make a depression into the ground.

Now, your next selections are at ground level, you want to cover the entire river. Look at the diagram below, // and \\ are representations of the river, the *s are where you should right click to make your selection

* //

\\

//

\\

*

Now move yourself until you are well under the river and right click again. Hit f3 and make the material water.

Your done! Resurface and check it out!

P.S. you may want to use heightmap a bit more on the ground to raise it up above the river, to give the same feel as the "forest" map

Extrude a selection the size of the tube you wish to create.
Use q and scroll to make the sides rounded into a cylinder, like the video shows.
Select as much of the the top part of the cylinder as you can, without selecting the cubes you have altered by using q and scrolling. Now cut away (intrude?) the selection. If this isnt exactly what you want, use the same technique as above to curve the inside.

Alternatively, make a mapmodel of what you want and import it. (very VERY easy with Wings3d)

There is a couple of ways to make secret passages in your maps.

The first is the simplest. Go into edit mode and make an ordinary wall that you want to be able to walk through.
Select the part of the wall you want to walk through.
Move to the other side of the wall
right click on the other side.
Hit f3
Go to materials, and select noclip.

And its done. Hit e and you will be able to move through the wall. Simple.

Next ones a lot harder... and longer... (and its also theoretical - I've never tried it, but I cant see why it wouldn't work)

Make your wall as per usual in edit mode. Now find the texture of the wall you just made (normally located in packages/textures)
Either make a new mapmodel, and animate it, or edit door number 2 in packages/models/doors/doors_02, so that it is totally flat. (For both these, look at the Adding Models to Sandbox tutorial on the main wiki page, under the Advanced Topics heading)
Make the skin of the mapmodel the texture you located in the first point.
Load the model in the game, load the model into the game.
Delete the cubes behind where you want the door to be.
Position the door in the place where you want it to be, if the size of the door is slightly off the size of the hole, use f and scroll of the size of the hole, until it fits.
Use triggers to determine what opens the door.
http://sandboxgamemaker.com/platinumartssandboxeditref.html Is useful when doing this.

All done!

For windows users,

When you have downloaded sandbox, find the file and double click it, or depending on your browser, open/run it when it prompts you

It will have to extract, so let it. Follow the instructions on screen and it will be installed.
