this page is simply a list of ALL art assets within sandbox which are incompatible with free software, replacements for them are highly desirable The items are arranged by license

if you're a musician, sound technician, 3D modeler or a texture artist (or any combination of), and wanted to get your work into sandbox; NOW IS YOUR CHANCE! (among many other chances: we're always on the lookout for art)

Why

Free software is software which gives the user 4 essential rights:

• the right to use
• the right to share
• the right to study, and
• the right to modify it for your needs

we'd like our included artworks to have a similar definition: our users should be allowed to modify the art as they see fit and (re)distribute it as such, they should be allowed to distribute it, and if they as such desire, suer it commercially

A few reasons why we have this goal

• This will allow us to ship with a lot of linux distributions in the near, future even pre-installed on educational distributions such as edubuntu.
• Our users would no longer need to worry about copyright laws, if they redistribute a repackaged versions of sandbox with their modifications.
• New standalone project would be able to use our project as a base, without needing to siphon out the non-free art they can't use, or without needing to beg rights holders for the ability to redistribute them.

Creative commons

the creative commons licenses provide a variety of clauses.

by definition of free software: one needs to be able to make derivative works from it, so we can't allow the ND clause. By definition it's also acceptable to make funds from the works, so that terminates the clause of NC, so you're left with the following two acceptable combinations

Public Domain

works in the PD are available to anyone for whatever purpose; we don't recommend anyone use this as the basis of the release of your artworks.

This is the custom license included with the loopix art

why

All models/sprites/textures/scripts in this package may be included in personal and commercial game projects (credit is welcome but not needed). Non of the content in this package may be sold for money or included in other selling packages. All copyrights remain at Loopix-Project. Any violence of the copyrights is being prosecuted by applicable swiss-law.

The license visibly contradicts, first saying it's okay to profit, then no.

we shoudl assume it's unacceptable to redistribute the art commercially until this discrepancy is cleared
